After a surprising end to Book One, time travelers who escape the present day journey through pre-colonial North America, encountering the Susquehannock, Timucua, and other tribes in a portrayal of indigenous life rarely given this depth or diversity in fiction. Intercut with their journey are chapters aboard Columbus's 1492 expedition. Most readers think they know about the Columbus expedition, that it was bound to happen. But every step of the way, it teeters on the brink of failure from lack of ships and crew, sabotage, fear, and mutiny.
