Georgia Senate District 39
Georgia Senate District 39 is a long district that includes vibrant communities in Atlanta and East Point. It is 23.8 miles from the southwest tip of the district to the northeast corner. At its widest it is 7.3 miles (from one side of East Point to the other) and .7 miles at its narrowest (from one side of Peachtree Heights East to the other).
There are nine universities including Atlanta Christian College, Clark Atlanta, Georgia Tech, Herzing College – Atlanta campus, Morris Brown, Morehouse, Savannah College of Art and Design, Spelman and Westwood. Also in State Senate District 39 is the Buckhead business district along Peachtree, Fort McPherson, many of Atlanta’s cultural attractions including the High Museum, Woodruff Arts Center, the Fox Theater, the Center for Puppetry Arts, the Breman Jewish Heritage Museum and the Dick Lane Velodrome – one of only 22 velodromes in the United States.
Opportunity and challenge lie within State Senate District 39 with some of Atlanta’s poorest and wealthiest neighborhoods. It is only in coming together and understanding each neighborhood’s unique needs and contributions that we can find the “unity of purpose over conflict and discord…that for far too long have strangled our politics” that President Obama called for in his inaugural address. And as different as our neighborhoods may appear, they share one voice echoed from Oakland City to Peachtree Hills seeking good neighborhood schools, safety from crime, economic opportunity for all and an honest government that works as hard as the people it serves.
